Years ago my Dad would remind me that we have two ears and one mouth. For some reason I thought maybe it was his attempt at being funny. I didn't really get the whole concept of listening twice as much as I talk! Now, this may be a little hard to believe {tongue in cheek}...but sometimes a thought comes into my head, by-passes the brain and comes directly out my mouth. There was a time in my life I thought this was actually quite funny. As age has decended upon me, it has become less funny...funny how that happens.
Today I am suffering a bit with laryngitis. Usually about 2-3 times a year my vocal chords struggle to eek out a sound. In the car this afternoon it hit me...that is the warning light going off in my brain. Prayers have been said beseeching God to help me think before I speak. Laryngitis is the warning light letting me know that the filter in my brain has been working too much over-time and I need to recharge. What is going on my life causing my body to create thoughts that need filtering? Did my conscious go on vacation and forget to invite the rest of me? Have I been too judgemental? Has my out box been over-flowing and the in-box feeling neglected?
It is time to sit back and take stock of what is going on around me, in my head and in my body. Am I focusing on the truly important aspects of life or letting a few 'bad' influences creep in? Do I spend time daily in prayer and LISTENING...God really does not want to hear me do all the talking. How can He answer all my questions if I have the ONE mouth running non-stop and the TWO ears merely beautifully adorned with earrings and turned off to recieving incoming messages?! Have I let pride wriggle in?
All good questions...now time to sit quietly and listen.........
