Reality Shows

Why do we watch 'Reality Shows'? Ok, maybe you don't, but I have been known to be hooked on a few. They probably say something about my personality - fairly certain it is not a good testimony to my mental stability - so I will refrain from mentioning any show in particular. In my fairly healthy state of mental awareness, let me entertain a few opinions of my own.
Americans (do they have these crazy shows in other contries?) watch reality based television programming because it gives us the upper hand. We can sit in the comfort of our cushy couch, watching on a wide-flat-screen HD television (or whatever the latest technology is of today) hooked up to more cable channels than we can name or ever hope to watch in a year, look down our noses at other people and say to ourselves, "I may have one or two idiosyncrasies, but I am no where near that weird or over the edge!"
Have you also noticed that people in other parts of the United States have different ideas of what is acceptable as far as behavior? It is easy to sit and judge people from less than thirty seconds of listening to what they say, what they wear and their body language. We condemn or praise someone on what we see from the outside.
In a nanosecond we pass judgement on people who willingly put themselves in that situation thinking they don't care what we think and then whine when they get bad publicity. We don't know where their lives have taken them, what is 'really' going on in their head and what their future dreams and aspirations may be. Is that fair, NO, not really, but...they did put themselves there.
Without giving this woman any more publicity...because the media has passed her off as someone who is craving the publics attention...I will only say that a woman who has been plastered all over the television, magazines, internet and more than likely a 'bookstore near you' is now said to have a reality show in the works. Honestly, I don't care!!! It does not matter to me how she is handling motherhood - it will have no impact on the way I am relating to my children. It does not matter to me how she handles dating - where is she going to meet a man to date with all those children in tow? It doesn't matter to me how they 'handle the holidays' - I have plenty of imagination to pull off any holiday in my home. It is safe to say that is one Reality Show I will not be watching.
I am wondering who is going to watch this show. Is it only to validate to themselves how 'normal' they are? Who are we to pass judgement on anyone? Sometimes I watch just to see how close others will get to the edge before falling over or deciding to take 'one giant step backwards - Mother May I?'
